The Red Mass has a long history. It is thought to have originated in the Cathedral of Paris in 1245 to invoke the guidance of the Holy Spirit on the judges of the Ecclesiastical Courts. The name "Red Mass" refers to the red robes worn by the judges and the red vestments worn by the priests, since red is the liturgical color associated with the Holy Spirit. They are still worn today. The Red Mass was introduced into the United States in 1928 at St. Andrew's Church in the shadows of the federal, state and municipal court buildings near Foley Square in New York City.

Parking information for October 18: The surface lot near the corner of Rockwell and E. 9th is free for Red Mass and luncheon attendees. A free shuttle will be available after mass to the Marriott and will make two return trips to the Cathedral after the luncheon until 2:15 p.m. You may leave your car in this lot and either walk or take the shuttle to and from the Marriott.

Parking at the Marriott: Two parking options are available at the Marriott - Valet or Underground parking in the Memorial Plaza Garage located at 300 St. Clair Ave. Valet parking is $65 without a voucher or approximately $30 with a voucher ticket, which will be available at the event from the Red Mass registration table. Self-parking in the Memorial Plaza Garage is approximately $13 a day but does fill up quickly.
