Historic installation of new Catholic bishop of Cleveland is September 14, 2020

Posted September 10, 2020

For only the 12th time in the 173-year history of the Diocese of Cleveland, a bishop will be installed to lead the more than 675,000 Catholics in the eight-county diocese.

The Most Rev. Edward C. Malesic, J.C.L, will be installed as Cleveland’s 12th bishop at 2 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 14 in a special Mass at St. John Cathedral in downtown Cleveland. Bishop Malesic, 60, was named by Pope Francis on July 16 to succeed Bishop Nelson J. Perez, who was elevated by the Holy Father to serve as archbishop of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia last February. All are encouraged to watch a livestream of the installation and Mass online at dioceseofcleveland.org as this event is ticketed and seating is severely limited due to the current public health crisis. This livestream is presented by the Sisters of Charity Health System, whose ministries in Cleveland include: St. Vincent Charity Medical Center, Regina Health Center, Light of Hearts Villa, the Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland, and Joseph’s Home.

Live coverage of the installation and Mass also will be broadcast on the EWTN nationwide cable television network, and radio stations WCCR AM 1260 The Rock and WILB 1060, Living Bread Radio.

Bishop Malesic was ordained to the priesthood on May 30, 1987, at St. Patrick Cathedral in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and served in various pastoral assignments in the Diocese of Harrisburg. He was the assistant pastor of St. Theresa Parish, New Cumberland (1987-89) and the assistant pastor of St. Rose of Lima Parish, York (1989-92). While in York he also served as the Catholic campus minister of York College of Pennsylvania. In 1996, he was sent to study canon law at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He received his licentiate in canon law in 1998 and served the Diocese of Harrisburg’s Tribunal in various capacities, including auditor, adjutant judicial vicar and secretary for canonical services. In 2015, Pope Francis appointed him the bishop of Greensburg, Pennsylvania.
