Cleveland, Ohio – February 6, 2023 – In 2022, the Catholic Community Foundation established the Angel Scholarship Fund to accept donations that qualify for the new state of Ohio tax credit made to certified organizations that grant scholarships to students, including those attending Catholic schools. Ohioans receive a 100% tax credit for up to $750 per individual donation ($1,500 if filing a joint return and both individuals make eligible donations). In it’s inaugural year, the Angel Scholarship Fund raised $4.5 million through 4,315 gifts to benefit Catholic school students.
Contributors to the Angel Scholarship Fund have the option of making an unrestricted gift that supports schools and students across the Diocese of Cleveland, or making a gift designated to benefit students at a specific Catholic school. All 106 Catholic elementary and high schools across the eight-county diocese are eligible to provide these scholarships, which are awarded to students based on financial need.
“The Angel Scholarship Fund is not only valuable to attracting, assisting, and retaining students in our Catholic schools, but it also holds tremendous potential for bolstering our efforts to ensure the viability of our Catholic schools and has the potential to benefit every Catholic school in the diocese,” says Dr. Frank O’Linn, superintendent of Catholic schools. The Diocese of Cleveland Catholic schools comprise the largest school system in Ohio and the sixth-largest Catholic school system in the country. Currently, 106 Catholic schools serve 38,476 students in Northeast Ohio.
The Angel Scholarship Fund prioritizes scholarships for low-income families (under 300% of the poverty threshold) that seek high-quality Catholic education opportunities for their children. Students from every Catholic school in the diocese can apply for scholarships by completing a scholarship application form. Applications are processed by the Diocese of Cleveland Office of Catholic Education. Donations that were made by December 31, 2022 will be distributed for use in the 2023-2024 school year.
