The Hoban Family

Much of the Hoban family’s life centers around their parish, St. Raphael in Bay Village.

When Monica and Jeremy Hoban, both physicians, arrived in Cleveland for their residencies, they weren’t sure how long they would be here.

“We ended up staying,” said Monica, a native of the Dayton area who trained as a pediatrician but paused her practice to care for the couple’s three children: Caitlin, 14; Clare, 17; and Cian, 19. Jeremy, who hails from the Toledo/Detroit area, is an anesthesiologist. He was named division chief of critical care for the Department of Anesthesia, University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center in March 2020.

“I prayed to find a place to raise our children because we were both away from our families and it was hard,” she said.

“God put us in the right place,” Monica said. “St. Raphael felt like home and the priests helped shape our family.” She said any time there was a professional or personal problem, they could count on Father Tim Gareau, the St. Raphael pas-tor, or one of the parochial vicars to guide them.

All three Hoban children were altar servers and are graduates of St. Raphael School. They moved on to Saint Ignatius and Magnificat high schools. Monica is active with the school and parish, including Hearts Afire program, facilitating re-treats such as 33 Days to Morning Glory and Consoling the Heart of Jesus.

When they learned about the Heart of a Shepherd campaign, the couple said, “It seemed like a good opportunity to pay back the priests. They never asked anything of us and they were always there for us.

“Monica referred to Jeremy as beyond generous.“

He wanted to donate. We both believe in the formation of our priests and that we should give, not out of our surplus, but when it hurts a little. That’s true generosity. That’s where we believe the blessings lie,” she said, so they are supporting the campaign as a way to thank all the clergy who have made a difference in their lives.
