The Northeast Ohio Catholic community came together on Tuesday, November 29, Giving Tuesday, in an extraordinary way to support the important work of 157 participating Catholic schools, parishes, ministries, Catholic Charities sites and programs, and other nonprofits through an historic online effort, named #weGiveCatholic. This first-ever online day of Catholic Giving in Northeast Ohio raised awareness of the important work of Catholic organizations that serve people of all faiths, races and backgrounds in our region.
During the 24-hour giving window, 4,147 gifts were made to raise a total of $414,199, which included $55,000 in pre-event sponsored prize money, secured by the Catholic Community Foundation. Throughout the day, participating organizations had the opportunity to compete for cash prizes.
Lake Catholic High School captured millenial donors by asking students and young alumni to make donations and text others for support. All Saints of St. John Vianney School celebrated their 40th anniversary by communicating through alumni representatives from 32 past graduating classes. While Catholic Charities Disability Services and Ministry connected with donors in a live coffee house event and ongoing social media campaign. Holy Angels parish in Chagrin Falls adopted a special project, raising $27,950 to help build Santa’s Chapel at Santa’s Hide-A-Way Hollow, dedicated to bringing Santa’s healing spirit to seriously and terminally ill children.
“The Northeast Ohio Catholic community came together as one on Tuesday and displayed a collective spirit of giving and caring that exemplifies our life as Catholics,” says Patrick Grace, Executive Director of the Catholic Community Foundation. “The money raised will not only help parishes, schools, ministries and nonprofits carry out their mission, but also inspires a greater sense of presence and purpose in our Northeast Ohio region.”
Bishop Richard Lennon expresses his gratitude to those who donated in saying, “I want to especially thank people during this season of Advent, a time when we celebrate God’s generosity to us as we await with hope the arrival of the Christ child.”
