Adele and Bill Malley Honored with the Archbishop Edward F. Hoban Award

Posted November 27, 2024

The Catholic Community Foundation proudly presented the Archbishop Edward F. Hoban Award to Adele Malley and her late husband, Bill Malley, at the Deo Gratias Annual Celebration on November 24, recognizing their extraordinary generosity to the Diocese of Cleveland.

Best known for their beloved Malley’s Chocolates, the Malley family’s legacy extends far beyond their iconic confections. For decades, Adele and Bill Malley dedicated themselves to uplifting others—supporting charitable organizations, mentoring entrepreneurs, and giving generously to strengthen the community they loved.

"The Malley family has charity and giving back in their DNA," said Father Tom Mahoney, a longtime friend of the family. "Adele and Bill didn’t just run a business; they used their success to serve others, embodying the values of faith, generosity, and community."

Though Adele Malley was unable to attend, her daughter, Megan Malley Cannon, accepted the award on her behalf. "Mom always asked us to stretch ourselves and to do a little more," she shared. "Serving others is part of our family’s legacy, and I thank you on her behalf."

The Archbishop Edward F. Hoban Award is named for the visionary leader who transformed the Diocese of Cleveland through an unprecedented period of growth. Appointed Bishop in 1945, Archbishop Hoban oversaw the establishment of 61 new parishes, 47 Catholic elementary schools, and 12 high schools, forever shaping the Catholic landscape in Northeast Ohio. His legacy, like that of the Malley family, continues to inspire generations of faithful servants.

The Deo Gratias Annual Celebration—held at the Center for Pastoral Leadership—began with Mass celebrated by Bishop Edward C. Malesic, JCL, who reminded the nearly 300 attendees that true faith is lived out through service and love.

"We are a blessed people—every one of us," Bishop Malesic said. "But our blessings must be shared. Bill and Adele Malley did just that, putting Jesus at the center of their lives and using their gifts to serve others."
