On Giving Tuesday, the Diocese of Cleveland rallied to support #weGIVECATHOLIC, Northeast Ohio’s online day of giving to Catholic organizations. During the event, $4.1 million was raised for participating Catholic organizations that serve people of all faiths, races, and backgrounds throughout Northeast Ohio. The total raised represents a 20% increase over 2023, and is the most raised in the event’s nine-year history. #weGIVECATHOLIC has raised more than $20 million since its inception.
“The faithful of our diocese came together, and through their generosity to the #weGIVECATHOLIC campaign, showed great compassion in supporting their favorite parish, school, ministry or Catholic nonprofit,” said the Most Rev. Edward C. Malesic, JCL, bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland. “Your kindness is a true reflection of the love and hope shared by the great Catholic organizations serving our Northeast Ohio community.”
Of the 224 organizations participating in #weGIVECATHOLIC, 25 participants raised more than $50,000; seven organizations raised more than $100,000. With the help of a generous anonymous donor, Assumption Church & Academy in Broadview Heights topped the leaderboard by raising $801,000.
Early gifts were accepted from Nov. 23-Dec. 2, and $488,997 was raised during that time. Then, throughout the day on Dec. 3, ministries, organizations, schools, and parishes took to social media to raise awareness, encourage participation, report on progress, and share video messages that spoke to the importance of their ministries.
“The remarkable success of the 2024 #weGIVECATHOLIC reflects the extraordinary spirit of generosity within the Diocese of Cleveland,” said Patrick Grace, Executive Director of the Catholic Community Foundation. “I extend heartfelt thanks to the 10,359 donors, along with the dedicated volunteers, pastoral leaders, and staff from non-profits, ministries, schools, Catholic Charities, and parishes who devoted significant time and effort to raise awareness and funds for this inspiring campaign. I am so grateful for the generosity and support of everyone who participated,” Grace added.
Throughout the day, participating organizations engaged in a friendly competition to gain the most supporters and win awards from a $63,885 prize pool raised in advance by the Catholic Community Foundation and generous donors. In addition, two matching gifts were presented by the Catholic Community Foundation: a $15,000 match sponsored by Boyd Watterson, and a $100,000 diocesan Catholic education Tuition-Teachers-Technology match; donations were fully matched by both during specific times throughout the day.
