Emergencies happen without warning – like an illness and reduced income. That was the situation for Priscilla, a single working woman in her late 20s. When a job change led to a significant pay cut and loss of her health insurance, she was struggling to pay bills – including the cost of medication for Type 1 diabetes she’s had since age 14.
Priscilla was in a desperate situation, about to pack up and move from her Akron apartment. “I was chasing my tail for a few months, paying some bills and putting off others. Then I called Catholic Charities to ask for help.” She was surprised when a Catholic Charities caseworker visited her apartment, asked questions, and truly listened. “They brought food, got me enrolled in an employment program to help me find a better job, and covered my $895 rent for a month. It gave me a little break to catch up. I felt relieved – with one less thing to stress and worry about.”
The Catholic Charities Emergency Assistance program not only provided financial support, but the case worker also helped Priscilla plan for a more secure future. “He helped me look at my priorities as a whole and how to account for every bill and create a plan. I didn’t think they would help me, because I’m single with no kids. But they really did provide what I needed.”
Priscilla is especially grateful that Catholic Charities helped her enroll in a job workshop focused on building a better resume, gaining certifications and taking steps toward a more financially secure future. “I had never received help from Catholic Charities before, but I appreciate their mission and all they did for me.”
